~ The History of Covington
Previously known as Wharton (1813), Covington real estate was renamed after the War of 1812 hero, General Leonard Covington. The railroad made its way to town in 1888. In the late 20th century, workers in New Orleans called Covington their home. In 2003, the city elected its first female (and Republican) Mayor, Candace Watkins. After Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, Covington real estate experienced a boom in population from former New Orleans inhabitants needing a place to live after their town was devastated. Many remain in Covington even now.

The Covington educational system is served by the St. Tammany Parish School District. There are two elementary schools, one middle school, two junior high schools, one high school and one K-12 school operating on Covington real estate in the district. There are also nine private schools in the city that are an available alternative to public education.
